Who are we?
We are a registered charity, set
up in 2005 and based in the villages of Great and Little Wigborough, two small communities in the heart of lovely rural north Essex. As with many rural communities, Great & Little Wigborough
no longer have a pub, village hall or shop and so the Friends of the Wigboroughs was set up with the aim of running social
events for the benefit of the villagers and using the funds raised by these events to maintain and restore the only public
buildings that remain in the villages - the medieval parish churches of St. Nicholas and St. Stephen's. What do we do? Over the past seven years we have run many events, building
community spirit in the villages and raising a substantial amount of money. We try and appeal to the broad range of interests
within the villages and there can't be many residents who haven't come along to at least one of our events, be it
a cream tea afternoon, garden's open day, quiz night, wine tasting or antiques road show evening. The climax of our yearly
programme is the annual Wigborough's v Peldon cricket match and family fun day which takes place in late summer, and provides
an opportunity for all the village to get together and cheer on our gallant sportsmen whilst partaking in a variety of delicious
refreshments.
Since our inception we have raised over £31,000 which has been put to good use restoring
and maintaining the two churches. These 13th/14th Century churches have huge significance for the villages, both in terms
of their history and given the lack of any other public buildings within the parish that can be used for community gatherings.
We have sought to make use of the churches whenever possible for our events- our annual quiz night is held by candlelight
in the atmospheric St. Stephen's church - and to this end we have recently contributed £10,000 towards the creation
of toilet and kitchen facilities at St. Stephen's which will make it much more usable for community events in
the future. We have also donated £10,000 to the restoration of St. Stephen's Tower, which will be completed in May
2012. We have also funded a new bell for St. Stephen's - the peals now ring out over Wigborough hill for the first time
in over 37 years, a very audible mark of our success!
